Poder (Can/To Be Able) — Essential Irregular Verb

Poder is irregular: puedo (I can), puedes (you can), puede (he/she/you formal can), podemos (we can), pueden (they can). Use it constantly: ¿Puede ayudarme? = Can you help me?

¿Puedo nadar aquí?
Can I swim here?
¿Puede llamar a la policía?
Can you call the police?
No podemos subir hoy — hay lluvia.
We can't go up today — it's raining.

Me duele / Me duelen — Expressing Pain

'Me duele' (singular) or 'me duelen' (plural) is how you express pain. Literally 'it hurts me'. The thing that hurts is the subject: 'me duele la cabeza' = my head hurts me. This is a reflexive construction — just memorize the pattern.

Me duele la cabeza.
I have a headache. (My head hurts me.)
Me duele el estómago.
My stomach hurts.
Me duelen las piernas.
My legs hurt. (plural — duelen)
Me torci el tobillo.
I twisted my ankle.
